In 2007, more than 25,000 charges of sex discrimination or sex harassment were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Sex discrimination and sex harassment in the workplace have been unlawful in the United States for more than 40 years — but there are still plenty of occasions when sex discrimination takes place on the job. What's more, it doesn't matter what kind of work you do. Any employee — from a minimum-wage worker at a fast food restaurant to a high-salary executive at a Fortune 500 company — can find themselves the subject of sex discrimination on the job.

What Does Workplace Sex Discrimination Look Like?

Sex or gender discrimination in the workplace takes many forms:

  • Hiring and Promotions: If a company refuses to hire or promote you because you are female
  • Terms and Conditions: If your workplace conditions or the terms of your employment are different because you are a woman, e.g., if you are a security officer who is not provided with a separate changing area on the job site
  • Sexual Harassment: If a supervisor demands sexual favors in exchange for positive treatment, or if your supervisor or co-workers engage in unwanted sexual behavior that is either severe or ongoing, and your supervisor makes no effort to force a stop to the behavior after you make a complaint
  • Pregnancy Discrimination: Any type of discrimination against a woman who is pregnant is also considered sex discrimination
  • Pay Rate Discrimination: If you are not being paid a wage that is comparable to the wages of a male employee performing similar work, that may be sex discrimination

The Wisconsin Fair Employment Act also protects people from workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
